The Mackinac Island Police Department is offering a unique summer internship opportunity for university students enrolled in Criminal Justice programs. Mackinac Island has a year-round population of between 400 and 500 residents but as Michigan’s top tourist destination can host as many as 15,000 visitors per day during the summer. The island’s police department is comprised of 6 full-time sworn officers and is augmented by 2 full-time Michigan State Police troopers, 4 full-time seasonal police officers and two interns during the summer season. The island hosts numerous events throughout the season including the Port Huron to Mackinac and the Chicago to Mackinac yacht races, the annual Lilac Festival and various high-profile gatherings including the Detroit Regional Chamber Policy Conference.

An intern’s day will consist of assisting visitors and residents in the busy downtown area, monitoring pedestrian and bicycle traffic and taking direction from the island’s police officers and troopers. Each intern resides in a private room within the police housing building located in the downtown district. Housing, utilities and internet are provided free of charge. Compensation is currently $12.84 per hour.

  • Have excellent interpersonal relationship skills
  • Appreciate working with a very diverse population
  • Be mature, responsible and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Pass a background investigation
